None of The Above by I.W. Gregorio

Publication: April 7, 2015 by Blazer + Bray

Summary:

A groundbreaking story about a teenage girl who discovers she was born intersex… and what happens when her secret is revealed to the entire school. Incredibly compelling and sensitively told, None of the Above is a thought-provoking novel that explores what it means to be a boy, a girl, or something in between.

What if everything you knew about yourself changed in an instant?

When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. She’s a champion hurdler with a full scholarship to college and she’s madly in love with her boyfriend. In fact, she’s decided that she’s ready to take things to the next level with him.

But Kristin’s first time isn’t the perfect moment she’s planned—something is very wrong. A visit to the doctor reveals the truth: Kristin is intersex, which means that though she outwardly looks like a girl, she has male chromosomes, not to mention boy “parts.”

Dealing with her body is difficult enough, but when her diagnosis is leaked to the whole school, Kristin’s entire identity is thrown into question. As her world unravels, can she come to terms with her new self?

My Thoughts:

I am extremely glad that I picked up this book. Before even reading this book I had no idea what intersex was, let alone what it meant. However, this book explained it thoroughly and portrayed the realities of what a person with intersex might encounter.

Plot:

“The biggest difference between boy and girls is how people treat them”

I loved the plot of the story. I loved how I learned so much more about the world around me after I finished the book. It shows that although you are different from others or have a disability or disease, you are not alone. Yes, there will be people who will be against you, but most importantly there will also be people who love and support you. Don’t forget that.

Character:

“That was When I realized that life was a multiple-choice test with two answerd: Male and Female, And I was None Of The Above.”

The protagonist, Kristin, is by far the most unique character that I have stumbled upon when grabbing a book. She is the first character, in the many books that I have read, struggle with the diagnosis of being intersex. Kristin is a teenage girl, who has a full scholarship for being proficient in track/hurdling, she has two best friends and a boyfriend that loves her. But everything in her world flips around just because of one night when she tries to be intimate with her boyfriend. She visits the doctor shortly after the night and finds out that she has AIS, which is why she never got her period and unfortunately is not able to have children. Instead of ovaries and a uterus that a normal female has, she has testicles instead. Anyways, Kristin is definitely one of the most inspiring characters that I have read about.

Writing:

The writing style of this book is simple and easy.

OTP:

“You fall for the person, not their chromosomes.”

Okay, that was cute ^

If you want a man or woman in your life, wouldn’t you want someone who loves you for you?

Well, this is exactly what Krisitn gets. A man named Darren.

Darren + Kristin = asdfghjkl

Overall:

This book was a great read. Definitely influencing and inspiring. If you had not read this book yet. Go get it now! I promise you that it will give you a different outlook of the world.
